Nature into art

There are three main reasons why I do what I do -it provides an outlet for personal creativity; I have a strong belief in the benefits of physical activity rather than electronic and I have a real desire to preserve and utilise the gifts nature has given us and which we often seem so intent on wasting.

All the wood I use is sourced from local tree surgeons - nothing is imported or commercially felled. I take only wood which has had to be felled for environmental or safety reasons, wood which would otherwise go to land fill sites or be used for firewood.   In this way, an art form is created from what would otherwise be a waste material, thus preserving some of our native timber for future generations to enjoy.  And in addition to that, even the waste material is re-cycled - given to a local nursery and used as a mulch.

The log shown above is a piece of sweet chestnut, weighing around 2.5 cwt

The finished piece measuring 18.25 x 16 inches

The pieces I make are simple, pure forms, not governed by the transience of fashion but timeless and elegant; not restricted to a narrow age range, lifestyle or type of home, but loved and appreciated by all ages - just as suitable as a wedding present for a young couple as it is a gift for a 60 yr wedding anniversary or as an exclusive accessory to complement your home.

I have always had a good eye for shape and form. The wood I use is often damaged in some way, either by disease or weather and because every item is individually crafted, I am able to shape each piece to show off the natural features - in many ways, nature is the artist, I am just the engineer, showing off her work to its greatest advantage. It is a journey of discovery to find the features hidden within. Then, using simple shapes to encapsulate nature’s artistry, I create an item of elegance and beauty.

The nature of the wood I use and the process of shaping each piece, sympathetically guided by its individual features, makes each and every piece totally individual. Such uniqueness is not possible in any mass production environment, giving each piece a very special value.
